These festive and patriotic Red White and Blue Jello Shots can be spiked with Vodka for adults or made alcohol free for the kids. They’re perfect for summer holidays and backyard barbecues!
Who can resist a classic jello shot? Not me! These are super impressive but actually totally easy to make. You just need to have enough patience to let each layer set! The rest is a breeze.
These layered Jello shots
- need some time for each layer to set, but are otherwise so quick and easy to pull together
- are perfect for Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day parties
- make 35 shots – great for a crowd!
- can be made with or without alcohol; just make sure children present do not get non-alcoholic ones mixed up with boozy shots!!!!
Ingredients in Jello shots
This is just an overview of ingredients you’ll need. Skip to the recipe below for quantities!
Ingredient notes
- Condensed milk: I have also seen versions of this recipe with condensed coconut milk in place of the regular condensed milk for a tropical twist!
- Red jello: I used strawberry because that’s all my local store had on the shelf, but these are actually my favorite with cherry flavored Jello!
- Vodka: You can use cold water in place of the Vodka for non-alcoholic Jello shots.
How to make layered Jello shots
Recipe tips
- Hot water: Make sure to use a measuring jug that can hold hot liquids! I usually boil the water, then let it stand for a few minutes so it’s not fully boiling anymore.
- Layering: I usually pour the jello straight into the shot glasses from a measuring jug with a spout. If you find it easier or expe4rience a lot of layer mixing despite properly set jello, you can also try holding the shot glasses slightly angled in one hand and pour the jello with the other.
- Chilling tips: I place the shot glasses in a 9×13 inch pan to hold them in one even space and clear out a shelf in the fridge before I start with the first layer. Makes things a lot easier!
- Setting: Make sure you let the layers set really well! If a layer hasn’t fully set, the jello layers will get completely mixed up. If your shots are close together (like they are in a 9×13 inch pan!!), make sure to test one from the middle. They set the slowest.
- Careful: Do not place the jello in the freezer to set it faster, it actually ruins the gelatine!
Storage tips
I keep the shots in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Unfortunately, you cannot place jello in the freezer (neither to set it, nor to store it). The gelatine changes its texture and can turn into a runny, gloopy mess!
